9/11 Koran burning 'disrespectful' and 'disgraceful', Hillary Clinton says

A Florida church's threat to burn copies of the Koran to mark the September 11 attacks has been condemned by Hillary Clinton as "disrespectful" and "disgraceful".

The American Secretary of State is the highest ranking US official to criticise the plans by the evangelical Dove World Outreach Centre to destroy the Muslim holy book on its grounds on Saturday.

"I am heartened by the clear, unequivocal condemnation of this disrespectful, disgraceful act that has come from American religious leaders of all faiths, from evangelical Christians to Jewish rabbis, as well as secular US leaders and opinion-makers," she said.

"Our commitment to religious tolerance goes back to the very beginning of our nation."

The diplomatic chief's comments came as she hosted an Iftar meal at the State Department to celebrate the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Earlier, military leaders warned the decision could trigger outrage around the Islamic world. and put the lives of US soldiers at risk.

Gen David Petraeus, the top US commander in Afghanistan, urged the plans be dropped.

"Images of the burning of a Koran would undoubtedly be used by extremists in Afghanistan – and around the world – to inflame public opinion and incite violence," said Gen Petraeus.

"It is precisely the kind of action the Taliban uses and could cause significant problems. Not just here but everywhere in the world we are engaged with the Islamic community," he said in a statement.

Anders Fogh Rasmussen, the Nato Secretary General, also expressed concerns about the risk to troops' security and said that "such actions are in strong contradiction with all the values that we stand for and fight for".

In 2005, 15 people died and scores were wounded in riots in Afghanistan sparked by a story in Newsweek magazine alleging that American interrogators at Guantánamo Bay had flushed a copy of the Koran down the lavatory to get inmates to talk.

The controversy comes amid a row in the United States about plans to build an Islamic centre and mosque two blocks from ground zero in New York.

The proposed centre has sparked vociferous opposition among Republican politicians and some family groups for victims of the al-Qaeda attacks.

A recent poll showed that 43 per cent of Americans have a negative attitude towards Muslims, whilst 25 per cent believe that the majority of Muslims living in the US aren't patriotic.

Christian, Muslim and Jewish religious leaders have all denounced the "misinformation and outright bigotry" against U.S. Muslims.

Terry Jones, the pastor at the Dove World Outreach Centre, acknowledged the legitimacy of Gen Petraeus's concerns, but vowed to go ahead with burning.

Mr Jones said in a statement released by his church: "We must send a clear message to the radical element of Islam. We will no longer be controlled and dominated by their fears and threats. It is time for America to return to being America."

The church, which made headlines last year after distributing T-shirts that said "Islam is of the Devil", has a regular congregation of only 50, but its plan has won thousands of followers on Facebook and has been widely reported in Muslim countries.

Mr Jones told The Daily Telegraph that he has received death threats and twice met the FBI to discuss his safety. He said he had purchased some copies of the Koran while others had been sent to him.

"We were not aware of what an impact it would have," he said of the planned action.

"We want to encourage people to burn the Koran to make a statement to honour those murdered on that day," he added, referring to September 11, 2001.

Gen Petraeus commands an international force of more than 140,000 troops trying to suppress the Taliban insurgency.

Kolkata: An abandoned dock on the Hooghly river, once known as Demerara dock, is being spruced up to act as a link between the descendants of Indian indentured workers in the 19th and early 20th centuries and their ancestral homeland. The memorial will be a pilgrimage point for those persons of Indian origin (PIOS) around the world who cannot trace their ancestral homes in India.

This was the last point of contact for the migrants before they set sail for the sugarcane plantations of British Guiana, which is today Guyana.

Though the dock in the Kidderpore area is no longer in use, it has a clock tower that is in good physical condition with a relatively fresh coat of paint. A memorial plaque is to be installed at the Demerara Clock Tower to commemorate the over one million indentured workers who sailed from similar depots.

Edged along by the keen interest shown by a group of Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) as well as the governments of Mauritius, Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago, the Indian government and the West Bengal state government have speeded up efforts to locate sites for a museum of indenture. The museum will relate the history of indenture and the stories of the people who left home to work in distant lands.

The memorial and museum proposal will be a joint project of the central and West Bengal governments. The Demerara Clock Tower memorial would be an emotional and physical connection for the descendants of the indentured workers.

Once the area around the clock tower is cleared up and landscaped, the memorial would be inaugurated at a special function with high level representation from Mauritius, Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana.

A team of the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs, the West Bengal government, its archaeology department, historian Leela Sarup and GOPIO vice president Ashook Ramsaran toured the area in a motorised launch last month to identify the sites which are linked to the migration of indentured workers.

The team travelled down the Hooghly river and inspected the sites from where the indentured workers began their journey across the seas. The officials used old maps, local information and details provided by Sarup to identify the Demerara Depot, the Garden Reach Depot and the Surinam Jetty at Kidderpore.

The team also visited Alipore and Bhawanipore in Kolkata to identify the site of the barracks where the indenture recruits stayed while they underwent a medical examination that would certify their fitness for agricultural labour. The team was looking for sites that were free from legal encumbrances.

Each of the labour importing colonies had to appoint an agent and set up a depot where the indentured recruits stayed while they waited for the ship to take them across the sea. There were separate depots and jetties for each colony.

Demerara was the name of the region where sugar was planted in British Guiana; it gave its name to high quality natural brown sugar, Demerara sugar, which was produced in the region.

The governments of Guyana, Mauritius and Trinidad and Tobago have expressed a keen desire to have a memorial in India for indentured workers who came to their country.

The descendants of indentured workers, now citizens of Guyana, Mauritius, Fiji, South Africa, Trinidad, the US, Canada and Britain, who come to visit India are often deeply disappointed to find nothing that can be associated with that phase of India's history.

Many of them discover that ordinary Indians have no knowledge of the great migration that took place in the 19th and early 20th century.

'We are the forgotten children of mother India. Mauritius, Trinidad, Suriname, Guyana and Fiji celebrate Indian Arrival Day and have memorials for the Indian workers. But in India no one remembers them,' said David Sheoraj of Trinidad, a visitor to the annual Pravasi Bharatiya Divas function.

There is a strong emotional connection between PIOs and their ancestral homeland. Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam of Mauritius, former prime minister of Trinidad Basdeo Panday and President Bharrat Jagdeo of Guyana are proud descendents of indentured workers. Each of them sought Indian government assistance to locate their ancestral villages and paid an emotional visit to the villages while on official visits to India.

In 2008, Ramgoolam had touched a chord with the hearts of the villagers gathered to welcome him when he bent down and reverentially touched the soil of his ancestral village, Harigaon, in Bihar.

I had watch this movie with someone, & at the end, she said it was very good a beautiful movie. What did i think about it?

I said i did not like how they made the werewolves, the vampire look chic with class, the wolves should of have some humanness to their character.

I did not like how Jacob (werewolf) was used. Edward (the vampire) left Bella. She was deeply hurting for months watching the seasons pass. She finally started seeing Jacob. At one point Jacob told her never to see him again, but Bella push her way back into Jacob life. At the end of the movie, it was a choice between Jacob & Edward & Bella choice was Edward.

The question is:

Government concerned Tamil terrorists among 490 asylum seekers.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia — The Canadian navy boarded a cargo ship Thursday carrying 490 asylum seekers, including some people Canada has said may be terrorists.

Public Safety Minister Vic Toews said the vessel MV Sun Sea has declared them to be refugees. But he said the government has concerns that there may be members of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, or Tamil Tigers, on board. Canada has labeled the Tamil Tigers as a terrorist group since 2006.

The ship is currently off the coast of Vancouver Island and is traveling at a slow rate of speed through fog. The government has been preparing tents on seaside military facilities to house the people from the ship, and jails have been warned they could receive new inmates.

"A vessel carrying 490 individuals claiming refugee status — including suspected human smugglers and terrorists — entered our waters and the Canadian Government is taking action," Toews said. "Human smugglers and human traffickers are now watching Canada's response to judge whether or not they can continue to take advantage of us."

Toews' office originally issued a statement early Thursday evening saying the navy had boarded the ship, but a government official corrected that later Thursday to say the ship was not boarded until shortly after 9:00 p.m. EDT.

The government official, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly on the matter, said the ship was boarded by navy, police and border services officials and is being taken to a navy base on Vancouver Island.

Passengers onboard are being offered water and food.

The MV Sun Sea reportedly approached Australia a few months ago but was turned away or feared it wouldn't be allowed to dock and sailed toward Canada. The Canadian government is worried more ships are on the way.

Canada is home to about 300,000 Tamils, the largest such population outside Sri Lanka and India. But Canada is worried it's getting a reputation of being too receptive.

Last October, a ship carrying 76 Sri Lankan migrants was intercepted in Canadian waters after crossing the Pacific from Sri Lanka.

The group on board the Ocean Lady claimed to be fleeing persecution.

All of the men were immediately detained in jails around the Vancouver area, but most were let go within weeks and months later and only one remained in custody on suspicion of being a Tiger.

By this past spring, he, too, had been released.

The Tigers fought a civil war for a quarter of a century in Sri Lanka seeking a state independent of the ruling Sinhalese majority. The Sri Lankan conflict ended in May 2009 after a massive government operation against the Tigers.

Toews has said the Tigers have used suicide bombings against civilians in Sri Lanka, as well as extortion and intimidation to raise funds within Canada's Tamil community.

Toews said they will prosecute anyone deemed to be human smugglers or terrorists.

"While our government believes in offering protection to genuine refugees, it is imperative that we prevent supporters and members of a criminal or terrorist organization from abusing Canada's refugee system," Toews said.

Chitranganee Wagiswara, Sri Lanka's high commissioner to Canada, has said Canada should not accept their claims for refugee status and said it is a human smuggling operation linked to the Tamil Tigers.

The ship was expected to sail through the Juan de Fuca Strait before landing in the Victoria region, and preparations appeared under way to house the refugees in large tents at nearby Canadian Forces Base Esquimalt and at a nearby naval refueling station.

Two Vancouver-area jails have been told to make room for a flood of new inmates this week.

Legal aid officials have called in immigration lawyers to act as duty counsel for the migrants once they arrive, and members of the Canadian Tamil Congress were traveling to British Columbia to offer any help that is needed.
